Agricultural Engineer's Day, celebrated on October 12, reinforces the importance of this professional for the country. He contributes directly to the production of food that reaches Brazilians' tables, in addition to generating jobs and income from exports.

Insumos made Brazil produce more food

The national economic scenario has increased the importance of agribusiness. Currently, the sector accounts for 20% of Brazilian exports. In 50 years, national grain productivity has increased sixfold, while the planted area has only doubled. In this time, the country has gone from being an importer to becoming one of the largest food exporters in the world.

This was largely possible due to advances in soil fertility techniques. The application of inputs provides more nutrients for plants and increases harvests. Inputs are also necessary because they correct the natural acidity of tropical soils.

However, there are challenges. According to calculations, national consumption should be close to 70 million tons. Last year, it reached 57 million.

Remineralizers come from volcanic and silicate rocks. The Ministry of Agriculture has a Normative Instruction, number 5, which is recent – ​​from 2016.

As for fertilizers, the Senate's Economic Affairs Committee (CAE) hopes to resolve the issue with a bill that creates the Fertilizer Industry Development Program (Profert).

According to the Senate Agency, the program provides tax benefits to encourage fertilizer production in the country. The text will soon be voted on in the Senate plenary.

Brazil is the world's fourth largest consumer of fertilizers, but imports 80% of what it applies. Product costs have increased significantly since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.

One of the best-known fertilizer formulas, NPK, indicates this dependence. The country imports 90% of the potassium (K) it needs for the formula, 70% of nitrogen (N) and 50% of phosphorus (P).

However, there is good news. The North region indicates that it has good potassium deposits. The South region should present new phosphate projects.

Agricultural engineers and soil analysis

In this scenario, there are approximately 120,000 agricultural engineers who celebrate their professional milestones on October 12th. Around 20% of this group are women. The profession has undergone major changes since it was regulated in 1933.

One of them is to operate in an environment that is increasingly focused on the use of technologies, such as the application of inputs. It also faces a social function, which is to increase food productivity over the coming years.

To do this, agronomists interpret the results of the soil analysis where the planting will take place. The interpretation will indicate which inputs to use.

Aeroseparators are integrated into production in applications such as limestone and agricultural gypsum, generally supplied in two formats: separately or in a blend. They reduce water stress on crops.
